Words in the story

Use the words above to talk about meaning and story moments—not only spelling.

  1. Listen: Where was listening used in the story? Why was it important?
  2. Friend: What did Tippy and Lobo do that showed friendship?
  3. Explore: What did the friends explore? What would you like to explore?
  4. Kind: When did the characters act kindly?
  5. Together: What did the animals do together in the forest?

Children may trace, copy, build, match, say, draw, or use each word in a new sentence. Adults can write down the child’s response.

Activities to try

Draw or color a forest scene. Add three things Tippy and Lobo might notice. An adult can write the child’s words underneath the picture.

Draw three boxes labeled Beginning, Middle, and End. Draw Tippy meeting Lobo, the friends exploring, and the clue that points toward the farm.

On a simple forest drawing, add symbols for the sounds the friends heard: birds, insects, leaves, water, or a frog.

With an adult, look and listen outdoors. What do you notice? What do you wonder? Watch animals from a respectful distance and do not touch or feed wildlife.

Use the story as a starting point for gentle investigation. With an adult, choose one question to explore:

  • How can a forest be a home for many different animals?
  • What might a bird use to build a nest?
  • What plants, insects, or other small creatures might live near you?
  • How can we watch wildlife kindly and safely?

Children can answer by talking, drawing, pointing, or dictating their ideas to an adult. Keep real-world observations separate from the imaginative parts of the story, and check local information before identifying plants, mushrooms, insects, or animals.
