Words in the story

Use the words above to talk about meaning and story moments—not only spelling.

  1. Nectar: What do bees gather from flowers?
  2. Pollen: How can pollen move from one flower to another?
  3. Hive: What do bees do inside their hive?
  4. Colony: How do the bees work together?
  5. Connected: How do the farms help one another?

Children may trace, copy, build, match, say, draw, or use each word in a new sentence. Adults can write down the child’s response.

Activities to try

With an adult, look at a real flower, garden plant, or picture. Notice the petals, leaves, stem, and any insects nearby. Watch without touching or disturbing living things.

Draw five boxes labeled flower, nectar, bee, hive, and honey. Draw or dictate what happens in each box. Keep the story sequence separate from details that may vary among real beekeeping practices.

Use small drawings or paper circles to show a bee visiting two different flowers. Move a pretend “pollen” mark from the first flower to the second and talk about how bees help plants.

Draw or match pictures for gathering nectar, caring for young bees, looking after honeycomb, and sharing nectar. Talk about how different jobs can help one community.

Draw The Busy Bee Honey Farm in the middle. Add Farmer Frank’s pasture, Jacques and Marie’s berry farm, and Hans and Dolly’s vegetable farm. Connect them with flowers, animals, food, water, and people.

Draw five boxes labeled farm entrance, flowers, hive, connected farms, and rainy walk home. Draw or dictate what happened in each place.

Make a helping promise

Draw one small way you can care for animals, plants, or a neighbor and complete the sentence: “I can help my community by…” Children can answer by talking, drawing, pointing, or dictating their ideas to an adult.
