Words in the story
Use the words above to talk about meaning and story moments—not only spelling.
- Orchard: What kinds of fruit trees did the friends see?
- Sap: Where does maple sap come from?
- Observe: How did Tippy and Lobo look closely without damaging the plants?
- Harvest: What foods came from the farm?
- Nature: What parts of nature helped the plants grow?
Children may trace, copy, build, match, say, draw, or use each word in a new sentence. Adults can write down the child’s response.
Activities to try
Draw three trees and label them apple, peach, and pear. Draw the correct fruit on each tree. Talk about how the fruits look different.
With an adult, look at a real berry plant, garden plant, or picture. Notice the leaves, flowers, stems, and fruit. Do not pick or damage a living plant without permission.
Draw or dictate a simple sequence: maple tree → sap → heated sap → maple syrup. Explain that syrup does not grow on the tree; people collect sap and carefully heat it.
Draw five boxes labeled farm gate, orchard, maple tree, berry rows, and farm kitchen. Draw or dictate what happened in each place.
Look for examples of sunshine, water, soil, leaves, flowers, and time helping a plant grow. Keep real-world observations separate from the imaginative parts of the story.
Match foods with a possible story pathway: fresh fruit, pie, jam, or maple syrup. Remind children that real farms and food practices can vary.
Make a nature promise
Draw one small way you can care for nature and complete the sentence: “I can help living things by…” Children can answer by talking, drawing, pointing, or dictating their ideas to an adult.
