Beth Welcomes Tippy and Lobo
The morning sun warmed the fields.
Tippy and Lobo arrived at the entrance to The Busy Bee Honey Farm.
Beth stood beside the little wooden sign and waved.
“Welcome, Tippy and Lobo!” she called. “I am so glad you came.”
“We are happy to be here,” said Tippy.
“My brother Andrew is waiting for us,” said Beth. “He will show us the flowers and the hives.”
Buzz, buzz, buzz!
The bees were already busy.
Meeting Andrew
As they came closer, a man stepped out from beside the garden.
“Tippy and Lobo, this is my brother, Andrew,” said Beth.
“Welcome to our farm,” said Andrew.
“We are happy to meet you,” said Lobo.
Beth pointed toward the flowers.
“The bees live here among the blossoms,” she said. “We watch them carefully and give them room to do their work.”
Nectar and Pollen
All around them, flowers bobbed in the breeze.
A bee landed softly on a yellow flower.
It used its long tongue to sip sweet nectar.
“Nectar is a drink made by flowers,” explained Andrew.
“It gives bees energy,” added Beth.
The bee moved to another flower.
As it flew, fuzzy bits of pollen clung to its body and legs.
Some of that pollen brushed onto the next flower.
This helps many plants grow fruits, vegetables, and seeds.
Back to the Hive
The bee carried the nectar home.
It flew back to the hive with the other bees.
The hive was the bees’ busy home.
Inside, the bees worked together.
Some cared for the young bees. Some looked after the honeycomb. Some shared the nectar with other worker bees.
“The bees have many jobs,” said Tippy.
“And every job helps the colony,” said Beth.
How Bees Make Honey
The bees placed the nectar in wax honeycomb.
They moved their wings to help extra water leave.
Little by little, the nectar became thick, golden honey.
“So the bees begin with nectar from flowers,” said Lobo.
“That is right,” said Andrew. “The honey is made inside the hive.”
The bees work together to store food for their colony.
One Caring Farm Community
Beth and Andrew looked across the land with their friends.
“Our farm is connected to the farms nearby,” said Beth.
In one direction, cows grazed in a green pasture at Farmer Frank’s farm.
“Animals need food, water, and good care,” said Andrew.
Near the maple trees, Jacques and Marie grew berries.
Bees could visit the berry blossoms and help the plants make fruit.
At Hans and Dolly’s vegetable farm, flowers grew among the vegetable plants.
Bees could visit those flowers too.
The friends imagined the farms together: animals, trees, berries, vegetables, flowers, bees, and people.
“Each farm has an important job,” said Tippy.
“And neighbors can help one another,” said Lobo.
Bees Help Many Plants Grow
The friends watched another bee visit a flower.
Then it flew to a flower on a different plant.
As bees travel from flower to flower, they carry pollen with them.
That helps many plants grow berries, vegetables, fruits, and seeds.
“The bees help the flowers,” said Tippy.
“And the flowers give the bees nectar,” said Lobo.
The farm community was full of quiet helpers.
Rain Helps Everything Grow
Just then, Beth looked toward the sky.
A soft cloud was gathering far away.
“Rain is coming,” she said.
“That is good news for the farms,” said Andrew.
Rain helps the grass grow for the cows.
It helps the vegetables, berries, and flowers grow too.
And when more flowers open, the bees have more nectar to gather.
“So the rain helps the bees, too,” said Tippy.
“Everything is connected,” said Beth.
Walking Home
The first raindrops began to fall.
Plip. Plip. Plip.
“Thank you for showing us your farm,” said Tippy.
“Thank you for teaching us about the bees,” said Lobo.
Beth and Andrew waved goodbye.
Tippy and Lobo began walking home together.
The rain grew a little stronger, but the path was still gentle and bright.
Behind them, the bees rested in their hive.
Ahead of them, home was waiting.
And the friends carried a new lesson in their hearts:
When everyone cares and helps, the whole community can grow.
