Activities to try
Draw four stands: Frank’s farm stand, the vegetable stand, the berry-and-baking stand, and a stand of your own. Draw or match the foods that belong at each one.
Draw five boxes labeled seed, soil, growing plant, flower or fruit, and food. Draw or dictate what happens in each box. Remind children that real plants grow in different ways.
Take turns being a farmer, a neighbor, and a visitor. Practice welcoming one another, asking curious questions, and explaining where a food comes from.
Draw five boxes labeled truck, market, vegetables, berries, and berry farm invitation. Draw or dictate what happened in each place.
Using drawings or picture cards, sort foods into plant, animal, and made from farm ingredients. Explain that real farms and food practices can vary.
With an adult, choose one question to explore:
- What does a seed need to begin growing?
- How do berries grow on different kinds of plants?
- How is maple syrup made?
- What foods are grown or made near your home?
Keep real-world observations separate from the imaginative parts of the story, and check local information before making claims about farming or food production.
Make a community promise
Draw one thing you could share with a neighbor and complete the sentence: “I can help my community by…” Children can answer by talking, drawing, pointing, or dictating their ideas to an adult.
